Jesus made his way to Bethany which was 2 miles from Jerusalem. When Jesus arrived Lazarus had already been dead 4 days and he was there to comfort Mary and Martha.
Martha came to greet him outside the city. She tells him if he had been there he could have saved him. Verses 22-27, But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”“Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” I admire Martha that even in her pain of the loss, when she knows had Jesus been there he could have saved him, she still believed that Jesus was the messiah. Then she left him to go get Mary.
Mary reached Jesus and had a few Jews who were mourning with her had followed. Verses 33,35-36, When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” I can picture this scene so vividly in my head. Although Jesus is the son of God he wept at their sorrow and his love for Lazarus. I believe that he weeps for us when we are hurting so deeply. But even the Jews that were with Mary questioned why couldn’t he have saved him.
My prayer for us today is to assured that Jesus sees our pain and when we are hurting so deeply and he weeps for us. He is there for us to comfort us. We need to just reach out to him.
